What is a permanent magnet and what is it used for?

A permanent magnet is a component made from a material that can retain its magnetism over time without any electrical power supply. This property, known as remanence, allows the magnet to generate a stable magnetic field over time. Materials range from high-energy rare earths (Neodymium-Iron-Boron, Samarium-Cobalt) to more traditional materials such as AlNiCo and barium ferrite.

In industry, permanent magnets perform a wide range of functions. They are used to hold and secure metal parts on machining fixtures, grip ferrous objects on automated production lines, and lock doors and hatches in security systems. They are also found in position sensors, magnetic sorting systems in food processing, and precision medical devices. Their reliability and zero energy consumption make them a preferred choice for any application requiring consistent, maintenance-free performance.

Benefits of our custom permanent magnet range

Choosing a custom permanent magnet from Binder Magnetic gives you a set of clear, practical advantages:

  • A comprehensive catalog: holding magnets, washers, bars, shielded magnets, Betaflex strips, magnetic thumbtacks, rubber-coated magnets... You can find the shape, size, and material suited to your application without delay.
  • High-energy rare-earth materials: Neodymium-Iron-Boron (NdFeB) for maximum power in a compact size, Samarium-Cobalt (SmCo) for high-temperature (above 300 °C) or corrosive environments, as well as traditional AlNiCo and ferrite materials.
  • Personalized technical support: our specialists, located across 5 branches in France (Paris, Angers, Toulouse, Strasbourg, Lyon), understand your real-world constraints and guide you toward the product best suited to your needs. Whether you are buying a single permanent magnet or ordering a production run, our technical team helps you select the right product.
  • Custom manufacturing: specific dimensions, anti-corrosion treatment, assembly in a sealed housing, and integration of magnets with a synthetic binder for better impact resistance. Working in partnership with permanent magnet manufacturers, we can handle both one-off quantities and large production runs.
  • Recognized certifications: ISO 9001 certified for more than 30 years and awarded an EcoVadis bronze medal, Binder Magnetic is a permanent magnet supplier committed to quality and environmental responsibility.
  • Proven responsiveness: Need to buy a permanent magnet quickly? Our available inventory enables shipping within 24 hours, and our service team can respond quickly thanks to our network of regional branches and our production facility.

Buying your permanent magnets from Binder Magnetic means choosing a true technical partner by your side.

Frequently asked questions about our permanent magnets

Binder Magnetic, a permanent magnet supplier, answers your most frequently asked questions.

What is the difference between a Neodymium magnet and a Samarium-Cobalt magnet?

Neodymium-Iron-Boron (NdFeB) is the most powerful magnetic material for a given volume. It is ideal for applications where space is limited. However, it is less resistant to high temperatures (generally up to 150–200 °C depending on the grade). Samarium-Cobalt (SmCo) offers slightly lower magnetic strength, but performs exceptionally well in high-heat environments (above 300 °C) and is naturally corrosion-resistant. It is the go-to choice for the medical, nuclear, and aerospace sectors.

How do I choose the right permanent magnet shape for my application?

Before purchasing a permanent magnet, it is important to choose the right shape. The shape depends directly on your application. Cylindrical holding magnets with threaded bushings are ideal for mounting on metal structures. Washers and rings integrate easily into existing assemblies (sensors, locking systems). Bars are suitable for magnetic sorting or filtration applications. For holding delicate surfaces, choose rubber-coated magnets. Our technical team can help you determine the geometry and holding force best suited to your specifications.

Can a permanent magnet be used in a food-processing or medical environment?

Yes. We offer magnets integrated into stainless steel housings, specially designed for environments subject to strict hygiene standards. In food processing, these magnets are used to detect and separate metal particles on production lines. In medical applications, our SmCo magnets meet traceability and resistance requirements for cleaning agents. Send us your specifications so we can recommend a solution that meets your certification requirements.

What are the lead times for standard or custom permanent magnet orders?

For standard items available from stock, shipping generally takes place within 24 hours. Custom orders have variable lead times depending on the complexity of the part (dimensions, surface treatment, volume). Contact us for a quote and a precise lead time tailored to your project.

Does a permanent magnet lose its magnetic strength over time?

The loss of magnetization in a permanent magnet is extremely slow under normal operating conditions. A high-quality NdFeB magnet retains more than 95% of its remanence after several decades. However, prolonged exposure to temperatures above the material's maximum operating temperature, severe mechanical shocks, or intense external magnetic fields can cause partial demagnetization. This is why choosing the right grade and material for your operating environment is so important. Our team can guide you through this selection.
